Kinsale Library

  • Sector Public Building
  • Location: Cork
  • Architect: Cork County Council Architects

Project Overview

This beautiful project in Kinsale town was designed by Cork County Council Architects. The €3.7million project involved the refurbishment of the historical James O’Neill building in Church Square, originally an Old Mill, which dates back to the late 19th Century. The library has been carefully and beautifully designed to sit inside the original shell of the Old Mill building, creating a modern, bright space whilst still maintaining the original charm of the Stone building. The new facility provides approximately 674m2 across three levels, a huge increase on the previous library premises in Kinsale. Across three floors Kinsale locals will enjoy the use of a gallery exhibition room, a mezzanine area, a children’s area with seating and beautiful large windows, and adult reading and study area and a dedicated digital facilities suite. We worked closely with main contractor Griffin Brothers on a specification for concealed riser doors, concealed pedestrian doors and a full ironmongery package. The concealed riser doors provide a sleek solution to traditional riser doors, concealing unsightly service cupboards, blending in with the surrounding wall and leaving only a minimal shadow gap on view. The concealed pedestrian doors lead off the main gallery exhibition space and sit flush with the frames to sit seamlessly into the surrounding wall. We also provided flush comms cabinet doors inside the main entrance of the library to house all network equipment for the facility. We provided a full range of operating ironmongery also for the project in a satin stainless steel finish, suitable for high traffic environments.
