Mixed-use development in north Dublin

Project Overview

KCC Group were appointed by Walls Construction in October 2019 for the supply of the Ironmongery, Automatics & Specialist Steel Door packages, for this mixed-use development based in north Dublin. The purpose built student accommodation formed a key part of the scheme and comprises of two blocks – A and B and were designed to encourage social engagement and promote student well-being with bright and airy spaces. The C Block is a dedicated retail store for LIDL.

KCC Group were specified by the Architects MCA for the Ironmongery Package and worked from the architect’s floor plans and door elevation to produce a full Schedule of Ironmongery that was fully compliant to their required specification ensuring a smooth delivery of product to site and also dealt directly with the supply of locks and hinges to the joinery company Essexford who supplied the timber doors for the project.

KCC worked with Walls Construction to supply the specialist steels doors that met the client’s specific requirements for this project. The steel doors were required in various locations with each door requiring a different level for security rating and some with electronic access control.

Dan Kilpatrick, Business Development Manager, KCC Group said of their involvement in the project, “With The KCC Group being a specialist in the steel door sets market we could offer the client a reliable, durable, long-lasting solution that helped to protect building occupants from security or fire risks while also adhering to the clients budget, aesthetic and performance requirements. Working closely with the project design team we designed the doors to meet the projects requirements which were then manufactured at our fabrication facility in Dublin.”

KCC Group’s Automatics and Access Control division supplied and installed 2No. GEZE PowerDrive Sliding door operator’s c/w double glazed aluminium door leaves to the main lobby entrance of the student accommodation. In order to create a sufficient draught lobby we installed the doors over 3 metres away from each other to ensure that one door was closed before the other door would start to open. The KCC Group chose to use the GEZE PowerDrive as it can carry a leaf weight of 200kg and is designed for areas with a heavy footfall. Both doors were installed with full activation & side screen safety sensors to comply with EN16005:2012 Safety at Power Operated Doors for Pedestrian Use.

KCC Group worked closely with Alfa Electrical to ensure that the doors were also secure by connecting their access control system to the external door, meaning the door could only be unlocked and opened by a member of staff or a resident student.
