The Department of Psychiatry is a HSE-run facility in Tallaght University Hospital that provides around-the-clock scheduled and emergency services to a catchment of 262,000 people in Tallaght, Ballyfermot, Clondalkin and Crumlin. The department has a 52-bed inpatient facility as well as several mental health centres located in the community. During upgrade works to the hospital we were subcontracted by Elenfield Construction on this unique project to help develop a seclusion room within the psychiatric unit which is located on the ground floor of the Hospital. We were specified from the beginning of this project and worked closely with the design team to provide an access strategy as well as a full ironmongery schedule. This project presented a unique challenge which came from the interior of the room where the walls and floor were covered in a specialist padding as part of the safety design which was necessary for the seclusion room. We were able to supply bespoke doorsets which were specially manufactured with a stronger core to allow the padding to be added without affecting the performance or functionality of the doors. The entrance door was manufactured with a built-in vision panel which allows light to flow into the room and provides another layer of safety for patient monitoring purposes. Specialist anti-ligature ironmongery was provided for the bathroom door. We also provided a number of bespoke screens throughout the room. These screens where specifically designed and manufactured for this project to provide sources of light whilst maintaining the integrity of the safety features in the room.
