Project Overview

The acute psychiatric unit in Cavan General Hospital provides accommodation for acute mental health in-patient services. The unit, which is located on the lower ground floor of the hospital, can accommodate up to 25 residents in a mixture of single en-suite rooms and dormitories. It also has a range of on-site facilities including a large canteen, a shop/newsagent and access to general health services provided by the main hospital.

Following a preventative action plan by the HSE, major refurbishment works were approved in order to increase safety standards in the unit for patients and staff. We worked closely with main contractor Sandar Construction to create a solution that worked for the specific needs of this project. Using our wealth of experience working in the mental health sector we were able create a strategy for patient and staff safety and supply specialist anti-ligature products which are designed with safety and durability in mind.

We provided a specialist ‘SafeDoor” to replace the standard doors in the en-suite areas. These doors use short-range magnetism for their fixing points and detach under any weight above 9kg meaning they can eliminate all points of ligature associated with doors and hardware whilst maintaining the privacy and dignity of the patient. We also supplied full anti-ligature ironmongery kits for the doors as well as anti-ligature radiator covers which were bespoke to the varying size of radiators throughout the unit.
